History of Uptown Forum
This historic building was built in 1916 for the Perkins Brothers Department Store. For many years, it was the retail center of Downtown Greenville for fashionable ladies. Perkins sold everything from cosmetics to hats to children’s clothing. Like many other small town department stores, Perkins was replaced with suburban malls that were only a short drive away in large cities. The store closed in 1976.
In 1978, a local couple interested in the preservation of Downtown bought the building. They completely reconfigured the space as a labor of love, turning it into a collection of small spaces designed for retail, artists and small businesses. They named their creation Uptown Forum. Unique materials were used in the construction, including the original pneumatic tubes that sent sales slips and cash from the sales counters to the Perkins business office on the mezzanine level. Just wandering the building gives you a sense of the care and whimsy that went into the renovation.
Today, Uptown Forum is home to a variety of shops and businesses that have drawn visitors from across north and east Texas for over 40 years, as well as artists, stylists and designers who love the community feel of the building.
